Retirement. Excuse me while I wince. It’s a response more visceral than intellectual. And at 69 I’m aware I’m old enough to know better. But I can’t help it.
For me, and many others of my generation, it’s a word that conjures up so much more than the end of paid work. It represents the last staging post before the final ending that can never be avoided.
